Here's Something to Vote For

It not like the Democrats aren't giving us plenty to vote against. We can talk about the arrogant self importance of our elected officials, or their anti-business pro-union boss tax-and-spend policies. We can go on and on about the systematic stripping away of our personal liberties, or the hypocrisy demonstrated by those who would deign to govern our personal lives.

Here's an issue that my representative hopeful can be certain to get not only my vote, but my support if he promises to promote. It's called The Enumerated Powers Act (H.R.450.IH).  The summary of the bill is “To require Congress to specify the source of authority under the United States Constitution for the enactment of laws, and for other purposes.

Many people don't know or have forgotten that the powers of Congress are clearly enumerated  in the Constitution and limited  to those enumerated powers.  Anything and everything else is reserved to the states and the individual. The Enumerated Powers Act would require that Congress take the time to reference where the constitutional authority resides that empowers them to act.  It's about time Congress hold itself accountable to the American People whom they serve.

This act, Introduced in 2009 by Representative John Shadegg (R-AZ) has been stuck in committee since it was introduced. I can understand why many in congress would drag their heals on getting this simple piece of legislation onto the floor. Maybe they would act faster if were 1000 pages long (instead of 2) and cost $47 Billion to implement. It's clearly a slap in the face to those who believe that Congress can do anything it wants. I'm looking at you, Pete Stark.

Every member of Congress as well as the President swears an oath (to God no less) to uphold the Constitution and defend it from all enemies both domestic and abroad. This reckless abandon that we've seen from Congress to pass massive, unconstitutional, and liberty-robbing legislation is more than just an affront on our personal freedoms, it's a violation of their own oath of office.

I'm not suggesting that Congress stand up, realize the errors of their ways, and impeach themselves, no matter how that idea makes me giggle like a school girl. But We The People should look closely at those who seek high public office. We should send those who will stand up for the freedoms of those they represent and will restore the balance of power away from Washington.

I'm adding 'Supporting HR 450' to the list of things I want from my candidate.
